Interview Highlights
16 Seconds: Hello there! My name is Oliver Sudden. I am an MC, DJ, producer, part-time promoter……from South London.
1min: We started our events in 2006, but I’ve been rapping since I was about 15.
1:40min: First memory of vinyl is being a kid and being in the living room…… my mum putting records on erm Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, George Benson, Grover Washington Junior. Loads of other like chilled sort of folk music, Rolling Stones and other bit-and-bobs like that.
3:20min: Back in the day for garage, like said, Big Apple, Beanos, and Swag Records and all spots round Croydon from when we were at school.
3:50min: The first stuff I got into was the UK hip-hop stuff. I just wanted to collect all the UK hip-hop stuff. At the time I was just listening to a lot of Jedi Mind Tricks, Nekro and the sort of hard American MCs, underground MCs. I was collecting all that.
4:12min: I went to Deal Real on a Sunday. Walked into the shop, it was pouring with rain, everyone sort of piled in the shop even if they weren’t going in the shop, just to get out of the rain. I picked out that Escuchame whatever it’s called, Braintax 12”. I just said slap this on, I was quite young at the time and it’s probably not the first record I bought but the first memory of that diggin’ feeling you know what I mean.
5:50min: He was like listen to this! It was bangin! It was Al Di Meola……. I walked back out, straight opposite his house was a charity shop. I walked out of his house over the road, and picked up another Al Di Meola LP for a quid which was probably better than the one he played, and the fucking Bugs Bunny Comes to London for a quid.

7:40min: You go in there and you literally can’t spend a thing, and there’s the times you think, ‘fuck what’s wrong with me’?……. You get one and you end up spending like a bit of your rent money or something. You know what I mean? The classic that everyone does.
8:00min: I have been lucky enough to get quite a lot of work from my records.
8:50min: There’s been times when you’re not even sure if it’s definitely the one, but it could be worth something and you found it for a deal. So you find the fucking money for it.
9:50min: I managed to like just buy a cuppa-tea and look through the crates and dream.
10:47min: It’s always a good days diggin’ if I come home with hip-hop bits, some sample bits, a mix….a mix bag of some nice stuff.
11:05min: You buy stuff across the board…. you’re learning more and more as you get different records, and learn about the artists on the records and who plays what. It’s never ending!
11:50min: I am sucker for 80s and 90s stuff….. I just want anything with samples, you know what I mean.
12:15min: Everyone was sampling across all genres…..Loads of Big Daddy Kane samples and the 80s bangers.
13:05min: In this day and age no ones gonna deny the hits made by sampling.
13:54min: Recently I’ve been loving these drum-less loops. Just banging, like Roc Marciano, certain like Madlib stuff and like Freddie Gibbs….. more of some of that loop stuff, it’s just amazing man, I love it you know what I mean, like canvas’s, like for the MCs to flip on with that original soul feel.
15:22min: I’ll always have my wax man, in my trolley.
16:40min: I worked out that spray paint boxes and shoe box tops covers them nicely, so you can fill them with 45s.
17:50min: Yeah definitely! Everyone has that vision don’t they. That little library in the corner. The little reading chair. Nice set of decks and a nice sound-system. Everything racked out and genre-ed up. Yeah man, you’ve gotta have it.
18:54min: I grew up on the classic stuff. Lowlife records, Why Not, Rodney P and all that sorta stuff. Lewis Parker, all the classics, Skinnyman….
22:52min: This is just a compilation man, I’ve had for a while. I got it of my mate Van the Man. Dave!
24:10min: Personally, I’ve never bought a record online.
24:35min: I’ve never bought anything online actually apart from a stamp for a cd.
28:18min: Most of the time I’m playing my new digs. Whatever’s new in the crate…. I try to grab a random if I’m doing something in my room.
29:02min: Love, peace and happiness, here it is! I got it down the road for a few quid. It’s just a couple of bangers on it man. I’ve been wigging out to this a few days a week. Over the last couple of weeks.
30:16min: I haven’t had a ere-we-go day for a while…. winter digging hooded up in the rain.
31:25min: I’m on the hunt for venues, not only for myself but for everyone pushing vinyl and good music. It’s so much more visual. Everyone always comments, you know what I mean…. People always coming up and taking photos of the record.
32:26min: There’s shops popping up everywhere. People are supporting. People are buying. It’s a good thing. People are releasing. There’s a lot of good stuff coming out on vinyl. Loads of UK hip-hop as well. I can’t keep up with it man.
