Best of 2014: Luke’s Top 10 Songs
Luke’s Top 10 Songs
List and words by SBTV label manager Luke O’Connor – Twitter, Facebook & Instagram
Flying Lotus – Never Catch Me feat Kendrick Lamar
The video to this song is nothing short of epic and the choreography is amazing. So engaging are the visuals, that Kendrick’s vocals feel somewhat lost at points but for me, this is one of the stand-out tracks – and videos of the year.
Jamie xx – All Under One Roof Raving
A great track with a great sample from ‘Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore’ by Mark Leckey. ‘Fila, Head, Kappa, Ellesse, Sergio Tacchini, Burberry, Diadora / Fila, Head, Kappa, Ellesse, Lonsdale, Lacoste, Kickers, Lee’.
JMSN – Ends (Money)
A friend of mine who’s out in LA at the moment put me on to JMSN a little while back and I’ve really taken to what he’s doing. The old school VHS aesthetics are very current and I love the overall nostalgic feel of this one.
Little Simz – Quest Luv feat Tilla
This song has held a special place in my heart ever since the video dropped and I feel it adds even more to what was already a very emotive track. Simz is a real talent and it’s plain to see why so many labels want to sign her.
Oscar #worldpeace – MOOK
Sometimes an act comes out of nowhere and really excites me – Oscar #worldpeace is one of the only people to have done that in 2014. Mike Skinner has found something special and I really like Marco Grey’s video. ‘Run riot go mental’.
RATKING – Canal
RATKING are one of the most refreshing acts that I’ve come across in the last year or so and Canal is taken from their debut album – So It Goes. So Sick Stories is another great cut but Sporting Life’s beat on this just edges it.
Section Boyz – Section Anthem (Delete My Number)
Morgan Keyz is responsible for putting me on to these guys and it’s one of the only Road Rap tracks to have really caught my ear in 2014 – despite the recent success that Stormzy has had. Looking forward to hearing more in 2015.
Solo 45 – Feed ‘Em To The Lions [Preditah Remix]
I was on stage in the BBK pen at this years Red Bull Culture Clash and I’ve never seen a reaction like the one Solo got in what must be 15 years of attending gigs and shows. Skip to 2:10 to see what this one did when it dropped in Round 1.
Spooky Black – Without U
Looks can be deceiving and the team behind Spooky Black may have pulled off the biggest in-joke of the year. Only time will tell if this is all an elaborate hoax but if RiFF-RAFF and Yung Lean can generate a fan-base then anyone can.
Young Fathers – Get Up
I saw Young Fathers support Run the Jewels at Electric last year and I don’t think anyone could have predicted the trajectory that their career would take if asked at the time. Get Up is my favourite cut from Dead – their Mercury Prize winning album.
