A street food staple straight out of Bahia in Brazil. I’m always one for trying new things and whilst wondering around the streets of Salvador I parted with my 5 reias (£1.70) and dug in. I should first explain the contents of acaraje. Acaraje originates from Nigeria and was bought over to Bahia during the slave trade. Bahia is has a heavy African influence which makes it the most vibrant and colourful regions in Brazil.
So what is it? It is basically peeled and crushed black eyed beans made into a ball and then fried in dende oil to give it it’s distinct flavour. The ball is then cut through the middle and filled with Vatapa (bread, shrimp, coconut milk paste) shrimps, chopped onions and tomato salsa. The intense flavour of the dende oil and freshness from the shrimp make it an ideal lunch and is surprisingly filling. If you’re ever in Bahia look out for the wonderful Bahianas in their all white dresses selling these on the streets.
