1. Living with Vinyl – DJ Dougie
Intro – Welcome to the first feature of ‘Living with Vinyl’. We’ll be hanging out with DJs, vinyl collectors and vinyl enthusiasts. We’ll find out how and why they fell in love with vinyl, including all the finer details of each individual. The series will be documented through an audio interview, selected quotes and a number of hand picked images. I’ll be the first to say the recording is raw. Plan was to transcribe, however this works better, hence the abrupt ending. Keeping things organic here.
First up we have DJ Dougie from South London. He is a up-coming DJ who has been inspired by the first wave of UK Garage. He keeps his sound deep and groovy whilst retraining the swing and funk elements of 2-step UKG. His recent experiences have led him to explore and develop his own sound and build an online following. That’s enough from me, so let’s hear from the man himself. We had a brief 20min chat, which is accompanied below by some selected quotes and photographs.

Interview Highlights
3:06min – So really, when I decided that I was gonna DJ I thought let me do this properly and learn from the first way. From picking up vinyl cos I sort of wanted to train my ear and I didn’t really wanna go down the route of CDs and reading waveforms, and reading BPMs and stuff, so I just thought though let me start learning the hard way.
3:31min – I just like the feeling of mixing music like that. Physical resistance when you’re sliding the pitch up and down. Love the feeling of fresh wax or even some of my old skool bits. It’s nice to have a physicality to my passion really, if that makes sense.
4:35:min
Hark – Do you remember your first vinyl?
Dougie – Yeah I do actually and I can see it right now. The first one I bought is Kristine Blond – Love Shy. It’s got the Tuff Jam classic mix on their. It’s got the Todd Ewards vocal mix on their and a couple of other mix on their as well.
4:49min – For me like old skool garage is my first love.
5:08min – EZ inspires everyone and no one can deny that really.
1030min – You gotta mix it up and sort of, for me… take your listeners on a journey sort of thing.
Speaking about where he buys his vinyl…
11:50min – When it comes to my old skool garage, which forms the majority of my collection, it’s just DnR Vinyl to be honest, just round the corner. They’re obviously the last 100% UK Garage shop in the UK.
13:15min – There’s no other feeling like actually having music in your hands.
14:22min – One of my favourites from the new stuff is from my friend Jamie Trench’s label Roots of Bloom.
16:50min – When the records spinning it’s hypnotic.
17:10min – I might have to be a bit bait and go with Groove Chronicles. Stone Cold… that is a whole new level.
18:43min I physically love the feel of vinyl so I’ll continue to buy it. I just hope that more labels put out stuff on vinyl.
