Mustafa’s Gemuse Kebap (Kebab) – Berlin

With Berlin’s large Turkish contingent it is not hard to find a place selling kebabs. On my multiple visits to Berlin my friends or myself have failed to find a bad one that makes you feel queasy or a greasy one that makes your stomach churn. In fact the way to categorise kebabs in Berlin is “very good” and “amazing” and Mustafa’s falls into the latter. I first became aware of it on my first visit to Berlin back in 2008 by an alternative tour guide Roo. For one reason or another it was on my 3rd visit to the city to finally see what the hype was about.
Located very much in the focal point of Berlin’s Turkish community in Kreuzberg, Mustafa’s is a kiosk like eatery that has 4 options on the menu. The classic doner or wrap and both of those options for vegetarians. They also have fries as well as soft drinks and beers.
When we arrived the queue was quite big and waited around 25 minutes but I hear that it often goes on for 40 minutes. However, although I hate queing for anything, the wait is very much part of the experience I just hoped it would pay off.
So we all ordered the classic doner, we parted with our €2.90 and watched how this wonderful kebab was assembled, white sauce, pink sauce and hot sauce, on goes the meat along with the fried peppers, onions, potatoes and courgettes, then came the crisp lettuce and juicy tomatoes and to finish the masterpiece a sprinkle of feta cheese and a squeeze of lemon. Wham bam thank you ma’am.
So as always I get my plastic fork and stab away at everything to get all the flavours in one bite. Wow, there was a lot going on but it worked so many wonderful combinations of flavour but the feta and roasted vegetables gave it that something special. More importantly unlike most kebabs in the UK where it is a massive lump of undesirable meat it actual meat and it tasted amazing. Don’t be put off by the queue it’s worth the wait.
