‘Pind’ means ‘village’ in Punjabi. Life in the villages in rural Punjab is a strong reference point for our communities all over the world – we trace our culture, traditions and practices back to those places. Made over three dedicated trips and based on thirty years of observations, I took photographs to document everyday life in my mother’s pind.

This photo-book shows a specific culture, rooted in Indian Punjab, in a village called Bir Kalan, in the district of Sangrur, Malwa. The photos give a close yet broad view of daily life in the pind. This is a historical document capturing the changing landscape of rural life in Punjab without falling into the trap of romanticising a lifestyle and existence. Many people growing up outside of Punjab might not have been as fortunate as me to experience it. I wanted to bridge this gap using photography for those who couldn’t visit, weren’t fluent in the language or simply didn’t have any connecting ties left to the motherland. Not only that, the photographs give the people of my village a voice and a face. This book is for those seeking home.
