Spoken Word Poetry: Aja Monet – What I’ve Learned
October 7, 2014
On my search for new inspiration I came across Aja Monet. She’s the youngest poet (so far) to have won the prestigious Nuyorican Poets Café Grand Slam Champion at the age of 19. That’s a pretty big accomplishment and she lives up to it in this visual poetry piece. I love this poem because it proves you don’t need to know fancy, complicated words to convey how you feel.
The way the video is shot adds to the role she plays in it: the watcher, the observer, the learner, the one with her eyes open. Everyone interprets things differently, but to me, this performance proves that learning is not about qualifications or academia, it’s about everything you take in from life.
Enjoy!
