Love it. Hate it. Whatever you think of American hip hop, is everywhere. Blogs, music television, radio, magazines, clubs and booming out of car sound systems. From Danny Brown, to ASAP, to Odd Future, to Rick Ross, to Kanye, to MF Doom and many more, the variety and diversity of hip hop has never been more diverse. It’s not just male rappers, its female rappers and a new wave of producers that are mashing up dance floors around the world as well. Azealia Banks, Nicki Manaj and Iggy Azeala are a few of the females there. As for the producers, Lunice, Diplo, Trapshit, Lex Luger, Spaceghost Purrp, Clams Casino are defining hip hop. The hip hop instrumental is strong at the moment. People are taking inspiration from everywhere and anywhere, each coming from a different angel. For example Baauer’s Harlem Shake. What is this? Is it hip hop? You tell me. I would say it is. Every dance has felt its force, it even smashed up Notting Hill Carnival (2012). I even chucked in two American Sikh rappers Mandeep Sethi and Hoodini to show how far hip hop is coming along. Even the old guard is still going strong. Nas, JayZ and Dre are all mingling with the current kings and future kings of hip hop.
There are a number of reasons why American hip hop is doing strong (We will leave the discussion of Americanization of British culture for another day). It is, to do with the fact that, the artist has a lot more control. With social media and niche media outlets making it easier to market. Waka Flocka tweets and retweets the majority of his followers. Mixtapes can be downloaded for free. BET channel is available on satellite providers. All star hip hop is basically a hip hop version of youtube. Plus bloggers are loving the visual element of the hip hop life style. The same can be said for Grime in the UK. Grime is strong and doing very well. In charge of its own destiny, with wise heads at its realm. The way music is consumed has changed and offers listeners far more choice. It is easy to access and interact with. Hip hop community probably has a more loyal following than those that listen to mainstream pop. The vast quantity and quality of the music at the moment made it hard for us to play everything in the show. We tried to cover all bases and artists. However it didn’t happen that way. After all it is a whatever session. We missed out so many artists that deserved a play. I won’t show of and make a list. Seriously it’s scary how much good music this scene has produced in the last two years. Regardless of this hope you enjoy the show. Peace and love.
