I’ve been wanting to do an RnB show for a while as it seems a genre that has lost touch. During the nineties and early noughties RnB was everywhere and the music was all about the voice. I think my love for any soulful music stems from RnB. If you ask anybody now what artists they would consider RnB you’re very likely to hear the names Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Trey Songz and Ne-Yo. Smooth yet questionable vocals over a dance beat which to me isn’t RnB.
All the tunes in this mix date from the mid nineties to mid noughties for me a magical period for the genre. Going through tracks to play, it took me back to my school days so many classics and proper RnB. This mix is definitely one for the lovers, especially the ladies with tunes from Ginuwine, Usher and D’Angelo (I know you ladies have drooled over that D’Angelo video). I couldn’t miss the queens of RnB either Mary J Blige, Aaliyah and Erykah Badu all amazing voices. Another thing that struck me whilst doing the mix was the death of male RnB groups. Way back when, we were spoilt for choice, Boyz II Men, Jagged Edge, Dru Hill, 112 to name a few.
Although I have been critical of the current state of RnB I must mention there are some new artists like Frank Ocean and The Weeknd doing something different.
