The earliest memories I had of Grime were when we were at school and So Solid Crew started causing a stir in UK music. Nobody was making music like them at the time and was a breath of fresh air. With the attention came the controversy with lyrics about drugs and violence being spotlighted at a time where there was a rise in gun and knife crime in London.

After So Solid Crew, More Fire Crew, Ruff Sqwad and Pay As You Go Cartel all started emerging and the Grime seen was in a healthy state. The music was getting more and more exposure and more raves were happening around London. By the time Dizzee Rascal released Boy In The Corner and won the Mercury prize it had blown up. To this day that album is considered the best grime album ever and has more than likely inspired the current crop of MC’s to get into making grime. For me at the time the biggest tune out was POW by Lethal Bizzle. This tune had it all, the mad instrumental and the hyped MC’s spitting their bars. I was too young at the time but I’ve heard stories of raves being shut down because of this tune so much was the hype. Nearly 10 years on and it still gets that mad reception from the crowd when it’s played and gets an instant rewind. Along with POW I reckon I Luv U by Dizzee Rascal was the other stand out tune of that era.

After all the negativity towards the scene mainly from politicians and other communities, Grime somewhat took a back seat and went back to being an underground genre of music. This was the time that Wiley & Roll Deep, Kano, Newham Generals and Boy Better Know started  to emerge. These guys still brought the same hype and beats but less emphasis on violent lyrics. At the moment, JME, Tempa T, P Money, Slew Dem and Kozzie are all bringing the hype and people are taking notice again.

People say that Grime is back but in truth it never went away and it’s still sounding fresh. For this mix, we have blended old and new, instrumental and vocals. There are some straight up classics in there from Dizzee Rascal, Wiley and Ruff Sqwad and some new bits from Preditah, Darq E Freaker and Alias who are all killing it right now with their beats. We have missed quite a few tunes, which we easily could have put in, but the show would be 3 hours long with over 100 tracks. Grime will always be London but more and more MC’s are cropping out all over the UK so keep an eye out. The appeal of Grime for me is the rawness of the lyrics and the mad beats and I think that goes for everyone that likes Grime. Hope you all enjoy the mix let us know what tracks should have made it on. Also excuse some of the mixing, not easy doing it without headphones but I’m sure we can be excused with the track list we’ve provided.
